To try to recover your external hard drive without formatting and not have to lose data, these simple steps will most likely solve it:
- With your external hard drive connected to your PC.
- Run CMD.exe as administrator on your Windows operating system.
- Look under Computer for the drive name of your external hard drive having problem, for example, imagine it’s F:
- At the prompt that appears, you have to type the following command chkdsk f: /f /r /x and press ENTER.
- Wait for the process to complete and try to connect it again and see if it no longer asks you to format to access it.

With AOMEI Partition Assistant
Another possible solution is to use third-party software, such as AOMEI Partition Assistant. You can download this software from here, and with it you must follow these other steps:
- Open AOMEI Partition Assistant on your Windows.
- Now click on the external hard drive that is causing problems, as is the case with F: in our example.
- Then click on Advanced.
- And in the menu that appears, click Check Partition.
- Select the last method Check whether there is bad sector on the partition and click OK.
- In the new window, click Start and wait for the process to complete.
- Then you should try again to connect the external hard drive and see if it no longer asks to format.

Try to boot with AOMEI as a last resort

- Open AOMEI Partition Assistant.

- Click on it with the right mouse button.
- Select Format Partition.
- Now you can choose the compatible file system, such as NTFS and press OK.

- Then Proceed and wait for the process to complete.
