Why my Laptop won’t TURN ON and what’s the Solution
Let’s go with the solutions quickly which I recommend reading in order to cross out those things that have not worked for you, I hope they work for you!
-
Connect the Adapter to Charge it
From my own experience, when we press the power button on the laptop, we are not always turning it off, but we may be suspending it.
A suspended laptop uses very little battery, and if we leave it 1-2 days like this, it will completely drain in many cases. Hence, it does not respond when we hit the power button.

On some laptops without a battery, once the power button is pressed, the battery LED lights up alerting us why it won’t turn on: it needs to be charged.
So, this solution is based on the fact that if you have wondered why my laptop does not turn on, it is very possible that it is due to the battery.
Note the following:
- Disconnect all peripherals, including secondary screens or projectors.
- If your model is old and the battery can be easily removed, remove it.
- No battery and no load, please keep the button on 30 seconds.
- Now connect the battery and connect the adapter to charge it. Try turning it on.
- If it doesn’t work, disconnect the battery and connect the adapter to see if the problem is in it.
- To rule out that the problem comes from the adapter, check that the battery LED on the laptop lights up when we connect it.
- If it doesn’t turn on, change the plug. Check that the pin of the adapter is not bent (if it is not USB-C).
- If it’s still the same, try another adapter.
- If after a few minutes connected it still does not respond, we will have to move on to the next solution.

Laptop Cleaning
My laptop won’t turn on and I don’t know why? One of the reasons may be all the dust that has blocked all the exits there have been and will have.
It is true that it should turn on anyway and turn off after a while, but we encourage you to arm yourself with isopropyl alcohol, a brush, compressed air and a microfiber cloth to get into it.

It is not enough to superficially clean the outlets, but you must open the laptop by unscrewing and detaching the tabs to clean it well inside.
When you open it, take the opportunity to check for a loose connection or check if there is something broken.

Can you hear the Laptop running?
Having no image, we have to pay attention to the clues that may occur when we hit the power button. If we hear the fans running and the HDDs spinning, it is because the laptop works, but does not show an image.
We look at the laptop’s LEDs again to see if the laptop is working. If you see that the relevant ones are on, the problem is on the screen.
The solution requires DIY, tools and a lot of knowledge because the part that is failing may be the inverter (unless you have hit it hard).
If your laptop is under a warranty and this happens, contact to RMA immediately because they will have investors to fix it.
They are expensive parts and it is not worth investing in them when the laptop is quite old because its value is low.
In case you find yourself in the last scenario, you can always open the laptop and rescue the hard drives to use them in another PC and recover the information.
WORKAROUND SOLUTION: Connect the laptop to an external display via HDMI, VGA or Display Port to certify that the problem is here.

Have you installed SSD or new RAM?
The problem why my laptop won’t turn on may be here, as we may have caused an incompatibility with the new hardware.

We have already said many times in Professional Review that you have to be careful with the upgrade of RAM and SSD because there are “exquisite” laptops.
First, check that everything is installed correctly, connected to the correct port, etc. Try again and, if you see that nothing works, reinstall the same as it was from the factory and try again because the fault may be there.
Additionally, try to install only one module, instead of making it work with 2 (in cases where you are installing 2 modules).
In this way, we will test if the damage is in a specific slot or in the 2; if it turns you on with 1 module, you already know what the fault may be: either the slot, or that module.
To top it off, I know many of you remove the CD-ROM drive to connect the old HDD that the laptop already had and install the new SSD where the old drive was.
Go playing with these possibilities because there are models that can cause problems (I haven’t had any on ASUS).

CMOS Battery
Although we are talking about laptops, the CMOS battery is in the motherboards of these devices, just like in desktops.
I recommend doing this if your equipment does not have a guarantee, since we are going to have to open it and this can lead to loss of coverage.
What we are going to do is replace the CMOS battery, which is a circular battery with positive pole and negative pole.
It serves to power the CMOS, a small memory that the motherboard has in which the BIOS or UEFI is stored.
You will have to open the laptop to access the motherboard, so you can do it at your own risk or take it to a technical service that will do it for you in exchange for a price.
Recommendations when opening a laptop:
- Not all screws are the same, remember the location of each one for later installation.
- Remember to pass a jimmy or file through the laptop’s joint to detach the tabs from the casing well.
- Disconnect the laptop battery before removing the CMOS battery.
- Replace the CMOS battery and power on the laptop to see if it’s fixed.

Buy a New Battery
The batteries are not very expensive and their installation is very simple once we open the laptop, so I would consider this option if you are somewhat handy and your equipment does not have a guarantee.
You can look for them on Amazon, eBay or even in official stores of the brand of your laptops (HP, for example).
Of course, make sure that the fault is here and not elsewhere because you will spend money and time for nothing.
It is normal for batteries to eventually break down or stop working after several years because they are exposed to a degradation process. This repair or replacement is very standardized, as it happens in Smartphone’s.
We hope that these solutions have helped you in order to correct the problem why my laptop does not turn on. If you have any questions, comment below and we will respond shortly.
